Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring
Saw this last night. It's a Buddhist fable, of sorts. A young man is trained from boyhood by a monk who attempts to instill respect for all God's creatures. As a boy, the kid is a bit of a sadist, attaching rocks to little fish and frogs, then laughing as the little guy struggles with the added weight. The monk attempts to remove this sadism by tying a big rock to the kid's back and then setting him off to free the little animals he was tormenting the day before. A nice little piece of karmic retribution, I thought, but it didn't stick. The kid grows up and kills his wife. Well, I guess there's only so much Zen Buddhism can accomplish. It's like Dr. Phil says, if you got the signs, you got the signs. You can't fight fate.
Also, the movie has a lot of rowing in it. If you like rowing, this movie is definitely for you.
