The Debate
I give the edge to Cheney, but not by much. He seemed more relaxed and in control of himself than Edwards at the outset, although his energy clearly flagged toward the end. Edwards did pretty well, though often he seemed much more nervous than the vice president. Cheney did say one thing, however; that showed that he has the biggest brass Machiavellian balls ever to swing between the legs of a veep. When Edwards said that Americans were sustaining 90% of the coalition casualties, Cheney responded that he was "dead wrong" and that the number was around 50%. The reason for this difference of opinion? Cheney is including the dead and wounded Iraqis . That is to say, we would be be taking 90% of the casualties if it weren't for the fact that so many Iraqis were getting shot and blown up. He took the fact that Iraqis were taking casualties and turned it into evidence that the coalition put together by the Administration is more broad than it appears. Amazing. I don't know what's more stunning, that Cheney said this or that Edwards didn't pounce on it.
Comments:
I thought it was one of the funnier moments in the debate. Come on, you invade a country, start an insurgency and then you tout the people who want to keep their country safe as your allies in the war on this country. That's just awesome.
During the debate, I was actually surprised how weak Edwards was. I would still score the debate as a tie, overall. Cheney did exactly what I expected him to do- actually I thought he was still reasonably restrained. Edwards, though sometimes completely ignoring the questions, did make the case pretty well that they are feeding us bull about the war in Iraq and the WOT.
I'm actually looking forward to Friday.
