Angels in America

Last night I saw the final three installments of Mike Nichols' magnificent adaptation of Angels in America. It is not easy to adapt a talky play of ideas into a visually pleasing film, but Nichols succeeds marvelously. Kushner is a gifted writer, some of his more elegant sentences left me intoxicated. I do have one complaint, however. What happened to Joe? He was easily the most lost of major characters and at the end of the film we have no idea what became of him. I can't think of why Kushner would do this. Is it perhaps because Joe was a conservative and Kushner disapproves of conservatism? I wonder what Andrew Sullivan thinks? Anyway, see it if you haven't. It's tremendous.
