Documentaries

For the last two days, PBS has aired an interesting documentary on the origin of life in the universe. I love watching documentaries like these but I'm always confronted with the same problem. The more interesting it is, the more I miss. Let's say you're watching some fascinatng documentary and it reveals some compelling bit of information. You've got to spend at least a few moments mulling it over, don't you? While you're considering the many ramifications of that last bit, you miss the next few minutes. And then where are you? Nowhere, pally, that's where. I suppose Tivo solves this problem, but I don't have it. I think the real lesson here is that if you really are interested in learning something, the best way to go about it is reading a book. To paraphrase Holden Caulfield, a book is at least human for Christ's sake.
